Werder woke up too late for the game – once again. And that bothered every Green-White player at Signal Iduna Park Saturday afternoon. Werder came into the game too slowly to offer enough resistance to Dortmund. "You cannot enter a game like that. We just did not realise what was at stake. We were just not there and Dortmund took advantage of our lethargy. We didn’t really play better until we had our backs against the wall. Then we played so that in the end anything could have happened. But once we didn’t use our chances," said Per Mertesacker. Clemens Fritz described his team’s shortcoming on the 29th game day as followed: "We just did too many things wrong. Initially we had big problems with our order and gave our opponents too much space. And we did not work very strongly against the ball so that Dortmund could push forward very quickly."
The hosts had two goals after just 22 minutes, which aggravated more than just keeper Tim Wiese. "We did not implement what the coach expected for us. We played pretty half-heartedly in the first 45 minutes. But we have experienced that quite often now. We always seem to wait for two goals allowed before we really go after it," said Wiese. And manager Klaus Allofs added: "My estimation of the past couple weeks was confirmed today. If we play like this it’s enough for teams like Nurnberg and Bochum. But it is not enough to challenge for the top spots. When you trail 2-0 in Dortmund and they have 70,000 fans behind them, then it will be difficult. We have the title as the team which best makes up for deficits. But that is not a title that we want. We have to play football for 90 minutes and not only when we have a knife at our throats. We went into the game too careless. While Dortmund played with heart, we did not show the readiness to withstand them and were too undisciplined on set pieces," said the manager.
