Werder Bremen missed a chance to take over fourth place in the Bundesliga losing 2-1 on the road against Borussia Dortmund on the 29th game day. Aaron Hunt scored the only goal of the game for head coach Thomas Schaaf’s team. Kevin Grosskreutz and Neven Subotic scored the goals for Dortmund.
Werder came into the game looking to set a club record with four straight road victories. Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf had to change his line-up in five positions with Tim Wiese returning in goal for Sebastian Mielitz while Naldo and Petri Pasanen took over defensive duties from Sebastian Prödl and Sebastian Boenisch. In the midfield, Aaron Hunt and Philipp Bargfrede took over for the suspended captain Torsten Frings and Tim Borowski. The first chance of the game was also the first goal of the game after 10 minutes as Kevin Grosskreutz headed home Patrick Owomoyela’s cross. Bremen fell behind 2-0 after 22 minutes when Neven Subotic headed in a corner kick. The Green-Whites found their way into the game and Claudio Pizarro could not beat Dortmund keeper Roman Weidenfeller after 34 minutes. Werder scored after 39 minutes but the goal was disallowed as Pizarro was ruled offside. And Bremen trailed 2-0 going into intermission.
Schaaf reacted after the break by bringing in Daniel Jensen for Marko Marin. And Bremen were the stronger team with Pizarro missing just wide left after 50 yards and then hit the framework 10 minutes later. Werder pulled a goal back at the 65-minute mark after some fine passing with Mesut Özil feeding Aaron Hunt, who beat Weidenfeller from 14 yards to make it 2-1. Schaaf made another substitution after 69 minutes with Sebastian Boenisch replacing Petri Pasanen. The Green-Whites however could not come up with many more chances and needed to work hard to keep Dortmund from pulling ahead by two goals again. Lucas Barrios hit the side netting in the 89th for Dortmund and shot over the crossbar from 14 yards seconds later. In the end, Bremen did not have enough to find the equaliser and remained in fifth place, four points behind Dortmund.
