Some 600 spectators showed up Tuesday afternoon at the Bremen training grounds to watch Werder’s first training of the week. Brilliant sunshine, warmer temperatures and Easter holidays in Bremen explained the number of visitors for the session. And the players had their hands full with signing autographs and having their picture taken.
Fans had to do a double take late in practice as the concluding training game took place without goalkeepers. The whole Green-White training did not include a single keeper. Top man Tim Wiese is dealing with a calf problem and only completed individual training while his main backup Christian Vander is not yet fit enough after a gastro-intestinal infection. Felix Wiedwald was missing on Tuesday after leaving with the Werder U23 team for an away match in Dresden. And Sebastian Mielitz, the 20-year-old who played his second Bundesliga match last weekend against Nurnberg, had to receive treatment from the medical staff. "Sebastian has a slight problem with his knee," said assistant coach Wolfgang Rolff, who could not say when Mielitz would return. “We have to have patience and see how the problem is tomorrow,” added Rolff.
Also missing from the pitch were Clemens Fritz and Tim Borowski. Both players underwent a routine medical check up. "Both of them trained in the morning," said Rolff about the 29-year-old players missing training. Peter Niemeyer also did not join his teammates at training as the 26-year-old completed an individual training session with physiotherapist Stefan Wolters and is improving day by day.
