Werder Bremen captain Torsten Frings has been suspended one game for the unwarranted red card last Saturday and will definitely miss this weekend’s match against Borussia Dortmund. In the decision, Frings was punished for "unsportsmanlike conduct".
"The chances that a further round of negotiations would end in an acquittal are zero. Just filing the complaint showed in which direction the ruling was going," said manager Klaus Allofs, who criticised the ruling.
Torsten Frings of course could not understand the suspension. "It’s too bad that the DFB (German Football Federation) cannot admit their mistakes. There are always demands for fair play. And in this kind of case you can show some backbone and rescind the penalty. It is really bitter to miss such an important game," said Frings.
Referee Markus Schmidt (from Stuttgart) showed the Werder captain the red card in the 82nd minute in the game against Nurnberg after Frings turned his body and slightly caught with his hand the face of Nurnberg’s Thomas Broich. Television replays confirmed statements afterwards by both players who said the contact was incident.
