Shortly before kick-off Sebastian Mielitz went through his usual ritual. He touched both posts and the crossbar with his fist and went into the game fully concentrated. And Mielitz's third game with the professional squad as a replacement for top keeper Tim Wiese and his backup Christian Vander ended up being a success. "It was important for the whole team that he worked out. He gave us a lot of certainty, he was decisive in the victory," said defensive ace Per Mertesacker. Other teammates also praised the 20-year-old. "That was not just good today, that was very good. I am really happy for him because he is a quiet, ambitious and very good guy who also comes from our own youth system," said Tim Borowski.
Head coach Thomas Schaaf was not surprised with Mielitz's superb showing. "This is not a surprise for us because we see him every day in training. He is an eager kid who gives his all at every training session. The game will give him additional strength," said Schaaf. Mielitz also displayed his calm manner during the marathon of interviews after the game. When asked about his strong showing, he said: "That was certainly an exciting game, excellent for the spectators, but not so good for the coach's nerves. I would maybe have been happier about a 3-0. But we won and that's what counts. My confidence is big enough to play in these kinds of games. But it depends on my team supporting me so well and making things easier for me. My ritual helped once again. I will touch both posts again the next time as well. That has always brought me luck."
