Other clubs need a long history to put together so many dramatic games whereas it’s just part of the program for Werder Bremen. For the second time in 45 hours, spectators at Weser Stadium were witnesses of another nail-biting thriller in the game against Bochum. This time though there was a happy end. "When you win it’s a nice feeling. But I would rather get victories without falling behind twice," admitted a relieved but smiling manager Klaus Allofs. "This offensive game is just part of us. That’s what Werder is about, and it brings us fans and spectators come to expect it. You can definitely say that our cost-performance ratio has fit for years. But I think that we are still looking for the perfect match. And for that everything has to fit together."
Despite all the concerns about the defence, head coach Thomas Schaaf also was happy about the spectacle at the finish. "Of course that is evidence that we always want to offer something special. It doesn’t always work, but we do not let ourselves get down despite any problems. I congratulate my team also for how they dealt with the tough situation at the end," said the coach.
There were three real heroes in Bremen’s dramatic victory. Claudio Pizarro and his dream goal gave his teammates the courage to fight back. Marko Marin continually picked apart the Bochum defence. And Torsten Frings scored the game winner. But keeper Tim Wiese also had his share of unbelievable scenes. In the first half he made a great save on a shot from Dedic. And then in stoppage time Wiese twice stopped good Bochum attempts. And the keeper’s teammates knew whom they had to thank. But the hero between the posts wanted just one thing – fewer opportunities to show off his skills. "It’s aggravating giving up so many goals. That cannot happen. Lots must change in our defensive attitude. But luckily it was enough this time," said the keeper.
