Werder Bremen twice came back from a deficit to beat Bochum 3-2 at home on the 27th game day, earning three important points. Claudio Pizarro, Marko Marin and Torsten Frings all scored in the second half for Bremen while Stanislav Sestak and Zlatko Dedic struck for Bochum.

Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf had to do without Aaron Hunt – out with calf problems – as well as Claudio Pizarro, Mesut Özil and Torsten Frings, who all started on the bench. The Green-Whites’ attack was made up of Markus Rosenberg and Hugo Almeida, who struggled against Bochum just two days after the 4-4 draw against Valencia in the Europa League. The first chance went to Marko Marin as the Bremen playmaker sent a dangerous free kick towards the goal of Philipp Heerwagen, who barely deflected the ball over the crossbar in the third minute. But Schaaf’s team had a poor showing in the first half.

Centre backs Sebastian Prödl and Naldo could not stop Bochum striker Stanislav Sestak, who beat Werder keeper Tim Wiese to make it 1-0 for the guests after 14 minutes. Bremen were close to equalising just before the break but Heerwagen stopped a Marin cross to leave Bochum ahead 1-0 at intermission.

After the break, Schaaf brought on Claudio Pizarro and Mesut Özil for Markus Rosenberg and Daniel Jensen, which helped Bremen’s game. Pizarro struck the equaliser after 58 minutes, volleying home a blast off Naldo’s looping pass. But the guests went back ahead five minutes later on a counter attack through Zlatko Dedic. Werder answered two minutes later after Philipp Bargfrede passed to Marin, who equalised a second time in the 65th minute to make it 2-2. Torsten Frings entered the game in the 78th minute for Tim Borowski, who was hit in the face by a free kick. And the Werder captain Frings gave Bremen the victory with his score in the 81st minute as his long range shot deflected off Andreas Johansson and in. Bremen needed two strong saves by Tim Wiese in the waning seconds to preserve the victory and three crucial victories.
