Even though Werder Bremen were not in the mood after being eliminated from the Europa League by FC Valencia, their fans showed them their appreciation. The Green-Whites were deeply disappointed about the elimination and could not feel the consolation that once again Weser Stadium experienced a football spectacle which will be talked about for ages. "Nobody cares that you fought hard. We failed. And we have to live with that," said team captain Torsten Frings with hanging head. "Of course getting eliminated hurts directly after the game. Today and tomorrow will be very bitter for us because we are very disappointed," said Marko Marin. And Clemens Fritz echoed the chorus of disappointed teammates in saying: "It was a luxury last season to reach two finals. We wanted to repeat that but today the first dream was shattered."
"We as a team looked bad on all the goals we allowed. We often were just watching them and were too passive. We kind of saw that yesterday with Stuttgart against Barcelona when Messi was not really challenged until he would shoot. With us, there were 11 players on the pitch who could have changed that," said head coach Thomas Schaaf. Manager Klaus Allofs could only shake his head remembering some of the scenes in front of Bremen’s goal. And that started already in the second minute. "We came into game poorly. We just have to be more clever in the decisive situations. That includes that we cannot play the offside trap and give space to the player with the ball and let the guy from the second row out of our sight," said the manager.
