Werder Bremen came back from a 2-0 deficit to earn a 2-2 draw at home against Stuttgart on the 25th game day of the German Bundesliga. Hugo Almeida and Torsten Frings scored for Bremen after Pavel Pogrebnyak and Sami Khedira had struck for Stuttgart.
Thomas Schaaf was without injured players Sebastian Boenisch, Philipp Bargfrede, Peter Niemeyer and Clemens Fritz but did once again have the services of goalkeeper Tim Wiese and Torsten Frings. Both teams struggled to find their rhythm in front of 36,664 spectators. But the guests grabbed the lead after 15 minutes. Aliaksandr Hleb fought through the left side – including a challenge from Torsten Frings – before passing through the legs of Naldo to Pavel Pogrebnyak, who beat Tim Wiese from short distance.
Stuttgart keeper Jens Lehmann made a strong save against Bremen striker Claudio Pizarro in the 31st minutes. And the Green-Whites fell behind 2-0 after 42 minutes as Timo Gebhart sent a cross into the middle where Sami Khedira headed past Wiese. And Werder trailed 2-0 going into the halftime break.
Thomas Schaaf reacted by subbing in Hugo Almeida, who came in for Tim Borowski as a second striker. After 65 minutes, Marko Marin was unlucky as his superb shot was blocked by Stuttgart’s Serdar Tasci. Werder remained determined but struggled to use their chances. And Schaaf brought on a third striker as Markus Rosenberg entered for Sebastian Prödl.
Hugo Almeida was the beneficiary of a keeper mistake by Lehmann in the 75th minute on his shot from the left wing to make it 2-1. And Torsten Frings equalised from the spot 2-2 with nine minutes to play after Stefano Celozzi took down Marko Marin in the area. Despite the two-goal deficit, Bremen fought back for a 2-2 draw against a strong Stuttgart side and improved to 39 points.
