Werder Bremen’s up-coming Europa League opponents FC Valencia had to accept bad loss on the 24th game day in the Spanish Primera Division. Head coach Unai Emery’s team was leading 1-0 against Atletico Madrid but lost convincingly 4-1. Valencia also were forced to play a man down for the final hour as Carlos Marchena was sent off with a yellow-red card.
Third placed Valencia (46 points) missed a big chance to increase their lead over direct competitors FC Sevilla for a spot in the Champions League. Sevilla could only play to a 0-0 draw in Bilbao but were able to shorten their deficit to Valencia to three points. And it seems quite utopian for Valencia to look further up the standings as FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are 13 and 15 points ahead, respectively.
