After losing the first road leg of the UEFA Europa League 1-0, Werder Bremen beat FC Twente Enschede 4-1 in the return leg at Weser Stadium to advance to the Round of 16. Claudio Pizarro scored three goals and Naldo scored one for Werder while Luuk de Jong scored for Enschede.
Thomas Schaaf’s team sent 23,000 spectators at Weser Stadium into a frenzy right from the start against a weak defence of the Dutch guests. The lead was 3-0 after just 27 minutes. Claudio Pizarro gave Bremen the lead after a fine attack from the left side with Hugo Almeida sending a cross into the middle for the Peruvian Pizarro to make it 1-0 after 15 minutes. Pizarro struck again just five minutes later as the Twente defence was caught napping and the striker slotted home Mesut Özil’s pass into the lower right corner.
In the 27th minute, Peter Niemeyer sent a counter attack cross from the right side just at the right moment to Almeida and the ball landed at the feet of Naldo, who didn’t miss his chance to make it 3-0. Werder failed to watch out defensively six minutes later and Luuk de Jong had room in the area to score past Christian Vander, a replacement for Tim Wiese, who injured himself warming up. The 3-1 Bremen advantage held up until the break.
Werder began the second half defensively but were lucky after 57 minutes as Bryan Ruiz suddenly was left alone in front of Vander. But Ruiz could only hit the left post. And going the other way, Pizarro re-established a three-goal lead, collecting a fine feed by Özil to hit complete his hat-trick and make it 4-1 after 58 minutes. Enschede gave all they could to improve the result but Werder were solid in bringing home the victory and deserved advancement into the Round of 16.
