When the fourth official displayed four minutes of stoppage time, there was an extra bit of hope. Werder had already been powering forward in the unbeaten Bundesliga leaders’ half and got an extra bit of tailwind. Werder’s 40th(!) cross sailed into the area and Per Mertesacker headed home to make it 2-2. And head coach Thomas Schaaf was not the only one who exploded off the bench.
"I was very happy that the team was rewarded with this goal and that they did not remain empty-handed. In the end, they were playing relaxed and really developed a lot of pressure. They tried everything. There was really some fire in the team. All told, you can be satisfied with the performance. We proved ourselves against the best team in Germany at the moment. That is worth something. We are not where we want to be. But we took another step forward," said Schaaf.
Goal scorer Per Mertesacker gave the Green-Whites plenty of joy with his header in the final minute. "At the end, we tried to use long balls to get involved our strong players in the air. We worked our way through a very hectic phase. There were a lot of fouls and lots of commotion. But in the end everything went well," said the German international Mertesacker.
Werder are on their way up – that’s the view of manager Klaus Allofs. "I can see that we are moving forward. The coach didn’t bring it up again. But we played today against the leaders of the table who were able to rest on Thursday while we played in Enschede. That needs to be considered in the evaluation of the game," said Allofs.
