What head coach Thomas Schaaf hinted on Friday is now official, as Werder Bremen will have to make due without Aaron Hunt on Sunday. The 23-year-old has stood on the pitch in every game for the Green-Whites thus far this season. But muscle problems in his thigh are too much for an appearance on Sunday.
Instead, Thomas Schaaf nominated U-23 player Onur Ayik, who will be on Bremen’s roster for the second time this season. Ayik scored a goal Saturday afternoon in Werder’s third division team’s 2-0 victory over Luebeck before joining the professional team.
Coach Schaaf, however, will have the services of striker Claudio Pizarro and left back Petri Pasanen. Both are on Werder’s roster and can be counted on to play from the start. "I don’t have any more problems with the knee and I feel good," said Pizarro, getting the green light to play against Bayer Leverkusen.
Head coach Thomas Schaaf nominated the following 18 players for the roster for Sunday’s game: Wiese, Vander, Pasanen, Naldo, Borowski, Fritz, Rosenberg, Marin, Özil, Ayik, Prödl, Abdennour, Husejinovic, Frings, Almeida, Pizarro, Niemeyer, Mertesacker.
