The Werder crew left on time at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning for Enschede. Also on board the team bus was Aaron Hunt as Bremen fans can breathe a sigh of relief. The 23-year-old took a hit on his ankle Tuesday morning in training and prematurely had to leave practice. But Hunt received the green light from team doctor Götz Dimanski in the evening to play on Thursday.
"Luckily it was just a slight bruise, which should not keep me from playing," said Hunt before the departure from Weser Stadium. In the evening, head coach Thomas Schaaf called his Werder players to final training at De Grolsch Veste Stadium. Before then there is the obligatory press conference ahead of the German-Dutch showdown. And "Mission Europa League Round of 16" has officially started.
The following 18 players are making the trip to Enschede: Wiese, Vander, Pasanen, Naldo, Borowski, Fritz, Rosenberg, Marin, Özil, Hunt, Prödl, Abdennour, Husejinovic, Frings, Almeida, Pizarro, Niemeyer, Mertesacker.
