Peter Niemeyer played 106 games for the Dutch club Twente Enschede. And on Thursday, 18 February 2010, the 26-year-old makes his return to his former stomping grounds. A number of media representatives took the chance to ask the Werder player about the up-coming match-up. WERDER.DE was there and noted some of the most important answers.
Hello Peter, plenty has happened since you left Enschede in 2007. How do you see the development at the Dutch club?
Yeah, that’s right. Quite a lot has happened in Enschede over the last couple years. With the new president Joop Munsterman they have been able to put together a team that has established themselves in Europe. There has been a change which has brought new things.
What does Twente mean for you as a player and person?
Twente was the team that trained me and made me into a professional. I made a lot of friends there with whom I still have contact today. Even though I was abroad in the Netherlands, I saw Twente as my home.
You are certainly anxious about your return there …
Yeah, absolutely. It is just nice to return there and see some people again. For me, it’s the first time that I am going back to Twente.
What can be expected of the opponents on Thursday? Twente ranks an excellent second place in the Dutch Eredivisie and only recently had to accept their first loss of the season.
Twente have really had some excellent results in the recent past. They have a good team which can surely find some extra motivation for these kinds of games in the Europa League. They cannot be underestimated whatsoever. We have to prepare 100 percent for this game and must have a good showing. Twente did not reach the Champions League qualification the past two seasons for nothing. That proves a certain quality.
So you would not speak of a showdown of David v Goliath?
No, not at all. I find it absolutely unfounded to say that. Twente have a lot of very good players among their ranks. Maybe they are not as deep as we are. The Dutch themselves tend to bring up the David v Goliath comparison.
