Werder jumped ahead after just 11 minutes with Peter Niemeyer hitting into the near corner for the opener. Schaaf’s men continued their push forward and doubled the lead in the 18th minute with Naldo heading home Mesut Özil’s corner kick to make it 2-0. Hannover were already beaten after 27 minutes when Leon Andreasen clearance attempt in a challenge against Per Mertesacker went into his own goal for a three-goal Werder lead. And Bremen made it 4-0 in the 44th minute as Aaron Hunt struck home a Marko Marin free kick. Werder led comfortably 4-0 at the break.
Hannover came out stronger in the second half with two substitutions. And the hosts did pull back a consolation goal after 59 minutes with former Bremen player Christian Schulz’s shot striking the upper left corner of the goal and crossing the line.
