"The first defeat has to come some time. And now it got us after 22 matches," said Twente Enschede head coach Steve McClaren after his team’s 3-0 loss in the Dutch Eredivisie top showdown against Ajax Amsterdam. Werder Bremen’s Europa League opponents were beaten despite a "fantastic first 20 minutes" as McClaren said about the team’s first loss of the season. "In these kinds of games, the first goal is usually decisive. And we did not use our big chances in the first 20 minutes. So we did not deserve to win," said Twente’s British coach.
In their midweek match Twente beat Heracles Almelo 2-0 (goals by Ruiz and N’Kufo) while PSV Eindhoven got past FC Utrecht 2-1 (goals by Toivonen and Engelaar). With the win on Sunday, Ajax pulled to within six points of Twente for second place.
