Many of Werder Bremen’s European internationals were drawn highly interesting challenges in the qualification for EURO 2012 with a number of teammates due to face off with one another according to Sunday afternoon’s draw in Warsaw. The German national team (currently with Mesut Özil, Per Mertesacker, Tim Wiese, Marko Marin and Aaron Hunt) will take on Austria (with Sebastian Prödl), Turkey, Belgium, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan in the qualifiers in Group A.

 

Werder players will square off in other groups as well with Group H featuring the Green-White showdown of Portugal (Hugo Almeida) and Denmark (Daniel Jensen) along with Norway, Cyprus and Iceland.

 

Another Bremen face-off comes in Group E where Sweden and Markus Rosenberg tackle Finland’s Petri Pasanen for a spot in Poland and Ukraine in 2012. The other teams in the group are the Netherlands, Hungary (possibly with Marko Futacs), Moldova and San Marino.

 

The qualification matches for the 9 June-1 July 2012 tournament will begin on 3 September 2010 and end on 11 October 2011. All told, 51 teams are battling in the nine groups for 14 starting spots along with automatically qualified co-hosts Poland and Ukraine. The nine group winners and the best second placed team will qualify directly for Poland and Ukraine. And the other eight second placed nations will square off in two-leg playoffs in November 2011 for the final four EURO spots.

Group C:

Group D:

France, Romania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Belarus, Albania, Luxemburg

 

Group E:

Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Hungary, Moldova, San Marino
