The showdown between Werder Bremen striker Claudio Pizarro and Hertha Berlin keeper Jaroslav Drobny was thrilling enough to make the hair on your neck stand up. Pizarro headed directly at Drobny; Pizarro shot at Drobny; Pizarro headed against the upright. The happy end finally came in the 81st minute with Pizarro scoring the game-winning goal, which was a relief to himself as well. "Yeah, that’s right. I did have a few chances before my goal. But luckily I ended up scoring a goal," said the Werder striker after a crucial 2-1 victory over Hertha Berlin.

But it was only in connection with the initial go-ahead goal by Marko Marin did Pizarro’s score mean three points for Werder. And Marin’s goal created a big smile on the face of the 20-year-old as it was his first score at Weser Stadium "Of course it’s a really nice feeling to have scored here now. But I’m also happy because we won and because it was such an important goal," said Marin, who admitted he was not worried when Berlin equalised shortly after his score. "Afterwards it’s always easy to say that. But I was convinced in this situation that we would leave the pitch as winners."

"Attractive football was not to be expected today. We were unsure of ourselves and under pressure. But we reacted very good in fighting until the end, holding our own much differently than in the past weeks," said Aaron Hunt, who also said the team had a different set of tactics for Berlin. "Whenever the opponent got the ball we had two players working as defensive midfielders. And whenever we got the ball back we wanted to quickly return to our usual formation," admitted the 23-year-old Hunt.

"It was all about gaining points today and having the right result. And we did that," said head coach Thomas Schaaf. "The team showed straight away from the first seconds on which way the game would go. In stages we passed very well but then we lost too many balls unnecessarily. Altogether it was an up-and-down match. It’s good that we have an experienced striker like Claudio among our ranks – someone who doesn’t get unsettled very easily and knows that he has to keep fighting even after missing such top chances," added the coach.
