Werder Bremen won their home match against Hertha Berlin 2-1 to end their five-game losing streak. Marko Marin and Claudio Pizarro scored the goals for Werder while Theofanis Gekas hit home the 1-1 equaliser.
Head coach Thomas Schaaf changed his line-up in two positions against the last placed team in the Bundesliga. Petri Pasanen and Peter Niemeyer started instead of Tim Borowski and Aymen Abdennour against the defensive-minded guests from Berlin. Bremen took the initiative early on offensively and was the better side the whole game at Weser Stadium. Mesut Özil’s shot was stopped by Berlin keeper Jaroslav Drobny in the seventh minute, and Claudio Pizarro struck only the right post after 20 minutes. And Pizarro could not take advantage of a chance from five yards in the 35th minute and the game was dead-locked 0-0 at the break.
Werder increased the pressure in front of the Berlin goal in the second half and were rewarded for their efforts in the 66th minute. Özil’s shot was deflected to Marko Marin, who blasted his volley into the far right corner. But the Werder fans did not have long to celebrate as Berlin equalised just two minutes later with Greek international Theofanis Gekas making it 1-1. Bremen however continued to push forward and Pizarro finally grabbed his goal to make it 2-1 nine minutes before the final whistle, hitting home Torsten Frings’s free kick for the victory. And it ended up being a perfect present for Werder’s 111th birthday.
