Werder Bremen have prematurely terminated their loan contract with striker Marcelo Moreno Martins as Werder manager Klaus Allofs confirmed Monday. The attacker, who transferred to Bremen in summer 2009 from Shakhtar Donetsk, was already presented Monday evening at English Premier League club Wigan Athletic. The South American, who still has a contract with Shakhtar, has been sent on loan by the Ukrainian club to the 14th-place side in the Premiership.
Moreno Martins, who has been out of Green-Whites training since Wednesday, could not fulfill the expectations in Bremen. The striker only played 63 minutes in five Bundesliga matches, three German Cup games (two goals against Union Berlin) and four matches in the Europa League and the Europa League qualification.
Things were better internationally in the past for the 22-year-old. In 2008, he was the scoring champion of the Copa Libertadores, the South American version of the Champions League. On 13 October 2007, he made his debut with the Bolivian national team and has been a strong producer for them since then, scoring seven goals for Bolivia in 15 World Cup qualification matches.
