Just before the end of the transfer period, Werder Bremen made some changes to their roster. Manager Klaus Allofs confirmed Sunday afternoon the acquisition of striker Sandro Wagner from second division side MSV Duisburg. Heading the other way on loan from Werder Bremen to Duisburg until the season are Dusko Tosic (until now on Werder’s roster) and Kevin Schindler (until now on loan to Augsburg).
Sandro Wagner’s acquisition means another U21 European champion joins Werder Bremen. Duisburg’s 22-year-old striker made headlines last summer with two goals in the European championship final. Wagner signed a contract with the Green-Whites until 30 June 2014 and is eligible to play immediately for Bremen though he is dealing with an injury. The attacker injured a knee ligament against Arminia Bielefeld on 18 September 2009 and is currently in rehab.
"We have intensively observed Sandro for a number of months and we are happy that we had the chance to bring him into the team. We are continuing our philosophy of giving young players the opportunity to continue their develop at the highest level," said manager Klaus Allofs about the acquisition.
Two other Werder players will continue the second half of the season with MSV Duisburg. Dusko Tosic, who has a contract with the Green-Whites until 2011, and Kevin Schindler, who extended his deal with Werder in the summer until 2012 but was sent on loan to Augsburg, transfer with immediate effect on loan to Duisburg until the end of the season.
