For neutral spectators, the game at Borussia Park was a true football festival – seven goals, loads of action in the area and excitement until the final minute. But in the end, Werder Bremen were left empty handed for the fifth straight game. This is a frustrating negative streak, which was extended primarily because of a catastrophic start to the game.

"If you had seen how we worked in the past week and prepared ourselves, it would be hard to imagine how we could play that kind of first half hour," said Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf after the game. The coach complained about his players’ readiness for action. "We just did not challenge any balls in the first 30 minutes. We just ran around the players," said Schaaf. And the coach said the game was pretty much decided with Gladbach ahead 3-0 after 18 minutes. "When you give an opponent that big of a lead of course it’s hard to get back into the game. We can always create chances and score some goals. But today the deficit we had to get back from was just too big."

Manager Klaus Allofs also said he was disappointed about the team’s showing. "That was pretty frustrating. We certainly did not imagine anything like that. We wanted to finally rely again on our defence. But you can sense the uncertainty in the team," said Allofs. After five straight losses, fifth place – which means the qualification for the Europa League – is getting further away at seven points. Aaron Hunt meanwhile could not come up with the words to describe falling behind 3-0 after just 18 minutes. "I just cannot explain how we could give this kind of performance. 3-0 after not even 20 minutes – first of all you have to think if that’s even possible. That didn’t live up to our expectations," said Hunt. And keeper Tim Wiese took a step further in his explanation. "It’s a recurring theme in our game at the moment. Everything is just going wrong. Everything was lost after 18 minutes. That was catastrophic. We need some confidence again and get out of this crisis as quickly as possible," said Wiese.
