The crisis from Werder Bremen continued on the 20th game day of the Bundesliga. Thomas Schaaf’s team lost their away match at Borussia Mönchengladbach 4-3. Raul Bobadilla scored two goals and set up scores for Marco Reus and Roberto Colautti for the hosts. And Werder’s goals were scored by Mesut Özil, Claudio Pizarro and Torsten Frings.
Poor defence mistakes
47,458 spectators in Borussia Park witnessed a crazy first half with a catastrophic start for Werder Bremen, especially with some huge mistakes in the defence. Bremen trailed 3-0 after just 18 minutes. Schaaf’s team allowed a counter-attack goal after five minutes with Raul Bobadilla feeding a fine pass to Marco Reuss, who slotted home. And the Werder backline did not look very good on the other two early goals by Roberto Colauti (13’) and Bobadilla (18’).
Özil pulls a goal back
Mesut Özil trimmed the deficit to 3-1 after 26 minutes after a pass from Marko Marin, hitting home right of goal. But Gladbach led 4-1 just nine minutes later. Bremen keeper Tim Wiese was too late to a long ball to Bobadilla and the Argentinean scored his team’s fourth goal of the match. Claudio Pizarro again made it a two-goal game five minutes before the break, heading home Aaron Hunt’s cross from the right side as the hosts led 4-2 at intermission.
Frings converts penalty
Thomas Schaaf reacted in the 57th minute by bringing in Hugo Almeida for Aymen Abdennour to strengthen the attack. Gladbach nearly scored again in the 62nd minute as Reus was in the right place after Wiese fisted away a ball but could not make it 5-2. Shortly thereafter Markus Rosenberg came in for Tim Borowski as another striker. But Wiese stopped another goal in the 73rd minute, batting away Bobadilla’s looping shot in the very last second. Werder were more concentrated in the second half and cut the deficit to one goal with five minutes left. Marin was fouled in the area and Torsten Frings stepped up to the spot to convert the penalty and make it 403. Bremen pushed forward looking for the equaliser but could not stop their Bundesliga losing streak from reaching five games.
