Werder coach Thomas Schaaf was clear in his message at the press conference ahead of the away match on Saturday, 30 January 2010 at 3:30 p.m. at Borussia Mönchengladbach. "We need some success and have to make sure that we collect some points. Otherwise the deficit to the international spots will get larger and you start to get in danger of no longer achieving certain things," said the coach. Gladbach’s coach Michael Frontzek also commented on Werder’s situation. "We live in fast times. Bremen are not facing the easiest of phases. But the club is still – as always – self-contained and exudes calmness. When they lose a couple games in a row no one goes crazy there," said Frontzek.
Gladbach are currently 12th in the league and absolutely need points against Bremen. "We will be challenged on Saturday as a unified unit. We have to play at our top limit and hold against them for 90 minutes," said Frontzek. "Bremen are a team that always plays tough in attack. And they try to take advantage of that since there are few teams in Germany that can match their quality." About his opponents, Thomas Schaaf said: "They will certainly play very compact and not try too much offensively. We have to search for our ways with determination, like we did in Frankfurt."
Schaaf has worked extensively this week in training to search down deep for the elementary causes of the negative streak and try to correct them. "We are relying too much on our style. But that has to be a bonus – the big plus. We have to realise that we must be willing to run and work harder in getting to areas where we can secure things and better support teammates. We worked on that and the team is willing to better implement those things," said the 48-year-old coach.
