The challenge with Schalke's Carlos Zambrano had a major impact for Werder defender Sebastian Boenisch. The 22-year-old Bremen player was injured so severely on the penultimate game day of the first half that he needed to have surgery by knee specialist Dr. Eichhorn in Straubing just days later. WERDER.DE spoke with the U21 European champion about his current situation six weeks after the operation.
Sebastian, where are you at the moment and how are you doing after your knee operation?
After being in Bremen on the weekend for the Bayern match, I am back in Donaustauf continuing my rehab. I am doing really well. We have to wait the next couple days to see how the healing process is going. But maybe I can return to Bremen already at the end of the week.
To then continue your program?
Yeah, that would be super. Yesterday I had the final evaluation with Dr. Eichhorn, the knee specialist who operated on me in December. And it looks very positive. In Bremen, I will continue working on building up my muscles so that I can begin running training. The ligaments are stable again.
Can you say when the Werder fans will see you back on the pitch?
It is difficult to offer a prognosis. But realistically would definitely be five weeks. Now we have to see how good the knee develops.
Because of your injury, Werder acquired left back Aymen Abdennour during the winter break. Are you happy about the positional fight with him?
Of course. A challenge at a position can of course also be a positive for your own performance. I think that Aymen Abdennour is a very talented player with huge potential. Still, I want to play again when I am fit.
After four losses in a row, the team has dropped quite a bit from the international spots. How do you think the team can return to the road of success?
We have to get back to the good streak from the first half and rely on our strengths. One guy has to be there for the other, ready to give everything they have. And we have to defend our goal like we did in the first half.
