Werder Bremen’s negative series continued on the 19th game day as Thomas Schaaf’s team lost their home match against Bayern Munich 3-2. Aaron Hunt and Hugo Almeida scored for Werder at Weser Stadium, but Thomas Müller, Ivica Olic and Arjen Robben notched goals for Bayern Munich.

The guests from Munich were the better side at the start and applied loads of pressure against Schaaf’s team, which was missing the sick Claudio Pizarro and injured Daniel Jansen. Hugo Almeida was chosen to start instead of Markus Rosenberg in the Bremen attack. But he could not stop Bayern from having the better chances early on. Arjen Robben struck the right post after three minutes and Ivica Olic was stopped by Werder keeper Tim Wiese.

Bremen grabbed the lead in the 10th minute with some fine passing. Marko Marin played a through ball left of goal where Aaron Hunt blasted into the upper left corner from 10 yards. Fifteen minutes later, Mario Gomez let a Bastian Schweinsteiger cross through to Thomas Müller and Wiese had no chance against the young German striker’s shot. And Bayern struck again in the 36th minute with Olic hitting home Philipp Lahm’s cross for Bayern’s 2-1 lead at half-time.

Thomas Schaaf strengthened his offence in the 58th minute, bringing on Markus Rosenberg for Tim Borowski. But Bayern remained the more dangerous side. Munich let Werder play their game and waited for the counter attack, which proved plenty dangerous. But Werder’s work paid off in the 75th minute with Hugo Almeida’s goal, which came after another fine pass by Marko Marin. But the celebrations in Weser Stadium were stopped three minutes later with Robben striking a free kick from the right side off the lower half of the crossbar and in. And that proved to be the final dagger in Werder’s fourth straight loss.
