Werder Bremen's birthday calendar has an especially big circle on it for January 19. On that day in 1920, the name "Sport-Verein Werder"("Sports Club Werder") was launched. In 1955, former Bremen player Uwe Reinders entered the world. Reinders didn't just celebrate his 55th birthday on Tuesday but showed up at Weser Stadium to honour a very special Werder personality. It was honorary captain Arnold "Pico" Schütz who stood in the spotlight Tuesday afternoon as Werder held a celebratory reception for his 75th birthday.

And one could tell by the guest list just how important the Bremen native was during his active playing days. Representatives from all of Werder's boards came to congratulate Schütz, among them Klaus Allofs, Klaus Filbry, Klaus-Dieter Fischer, Willi Lemke, head coach Thomas Schaaf and Uwe Seeler.

"I was 14 years old, 'Pico' was 20. But for me back then he was already a big star. If I had to pick an All-Werder Team for the 111th year of Werder, then 'Pico' would be my captain! A lot of great players have played for Werder. But 'Pico' was and is Werder," said Werder manager Klaus-Dieter Fischer. The Werder official also recalled Schütz's biggest successes and unforgettable career, which started with a base salary of 120 marks and a job as damage assessor at the port. Schütz's first titles were Werder's German Cup crown in 1961 and the German championship in 1965. Schütz played in 826 matches for the Green-Whites before saying goodbye in 1973 with a farewell match against an All-Bundesliga side featuring greats like Franz Beckenbauer, Sepp Maier, Wolfgang Overrath, "Ente" Lippens and many more. Fischer reiterated that it was a farewell from his active playing career, but never from Werder. Fischer also thanked Schütz for his long-time help as assistant coach for Werder's U15 and U17 teams.
