From Werder's point of view it was the scene of the game. In the 24th minute of the game at Frankfurt's Commerzbank Arena, Marko Marin poked the ball through the defence in the area before Frankfurt defender Maik Franz stuck out his leg and brought down Werder's No. 10.
But referee Michael Weiner refused to blow the whistle and point to the spot despite having a clear view of the proceedings in Frankfurt's area. "That was a clear foul against me and I think the referee knows that as well. In my view that was the game-deciding situation," said Marko Marin afterwards. Aaron Hunt, who stood next to Marin on the play, confirmed his playmaker's view. "The ball was gone and Franz only struck Marko. It doesn't get any clearer than that!"
"We were dreaming of using our style to solve things. But we were wrong again - just like against Schalke and partially at Hamburg. You have to stand up to resistance. And the team didn't show that. We have no chance of playing near the top like this," said manager Klaus Allofs loud and clearly. Head coach Thomas Schaaf criticised the missing clout from his team. "We have to play more decisively, more together and more goal- and result-orientated. We are very unsatisfied because we didn't get anything for our effort," said the coach. And his players believe their failure to push forward effectively was the key to the defeat. "Of course we wanted to win today, but we were just missing too much. Even though we had more ball possession, we didn't create enough shots on goal. We were lacking the absolute will to score a goal. That's why we lost this game," said Aaron Hunt.
