Werder Bremen have another home grown talent on their professional roster. The 19-year-old striker Onur Ayik, who transferred to Werder in summer 2004, has signed a contract with the Green-Whites until 30 June 2012. "He is a young man who has worked his way through all our youth teams and really impressed in the A-Youth and his first appearances in the third league. We want to offer him the perspective of continuing to develop with us," said manager Klaus Allofs of the signature of the Turkish junior international, who is from Walsrode and also has a German passport. "Onur really impressed last season. He is a young, intelligent player who fits very well into our game philosophy," said Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf.
The professional contract is an early present for Onur Ayik, who will celebrate his 20th birthday on 28 January. "Of course I am very proud. I have dreamt of this for five years. But I also know that it's just an intermediate goal. In the training camp in Dubaii, I got a first impression of what it's like in the team. Everyone really welcomed me very much. Now I have to improve my performances," said Ayik. The striker will initially collect game practice with the U23 squad and travel with the third league team to their training camp in Chiclana in southern Spain. "Then I will have my trade school phase in Bremen finished and can really go at it. The muscle tightening that I had at the professional training camp in Dubai is no longer an issue," said Ayik.
Ayik began playing football at age 5 with SV Viktoria Rethem and transferred nine years later - in summer 2004 - to Werder Bremen's youth team. With the Green-Whites, he became U15 champion as well as the U19 North German champions last summer. In addition, he also played at the U19 European championship with the Turkish national team. He has recently been invited to Bremen's professional training and also accompanied the team to their training camp in Dubai. Ayik has played 17 matches for Werder this season in the third league and scored six goals.
