Twelve months have flown by – with highs and lows, celebrations and disappointments, departures and reunions. 2009 was like no other year. It’s not easy to keep everything straight. That’s why WERDER.DE has put together a Green-White flashback for the end of the year. Werder 2009 from A to Z – to remember and smile. Today: Part P – S:

P - Pizarro, Claudio: Even the www.werder.de server went down with the news on August 18 that Claudio Pizarro was signed away from Chelsea on a contract until 30 June 2012. "It was important for me that (head coach) Thomas (Schaaf) and (manager) Klaus (Allofs) will still be there. I am looking forward to the old colleagues and the new acquisitions. I feel the positive energy that the people here in Bremen give me. And my family feels really welcome as well," said Pizarro, who has fit perfectly into the team and had a great first half. And that will be continued! Guaranteed!

Q - dramatic Quartet: There was a dramatic quartet of games between Bremen and Hamburg, who faced off in the semi-finals of the German Cup and the UEFA Cup as well as in the Bundesliga. Werder beat Hamburg in the league after persevering in both the cup competitions. And of course the final outcome is well known - winning the German Cup final against Bayer Leverkusen and losing the UEFA Cup final against Shakhtar Donetsk.

R - Ronaldo Aparecido Rodrigues: The canard of the year went public just before the start of Werder's training camp in July. An English Internet portal claimed that the signature of centreback Naldo on a deal with Arsenal London was just a formality. By September, the Brazilian had extended his contract with Werder until 2013. Ronaldo Aparecido Rodrigues was hardly more than a lanky talent when he came to Bremen from Brazilian club Juventude to take over for Valerien Ismaél in the defence. But he has turned into an absolute leader. He is nearly perfect on defence and extremely dangerous offensively - he has already scored eight goals combined from all the competitions. That is a super rate for a defender!

S - Skat: 2009 also saw the farewell of two of Werder Bremen's most important and formative figures in the last 20 years. Managers Manfred Müller and Jürgen L. Born both moved into retirement. "I leave happy," said Müller, who also admitted: "I will miss that tingle before the European matches - as well as winning at skat (a German card game). But that doesn't mean that I won't fly with the team any more in the future." And both Müüler and Born have life-time VIP platinum passes for the home matches. So there will be plenty of chances down the road for a few friendly rounds of skat.

The remaining letters of the 2009 WERDER almanac will continue in the coming days.
