Twelve months have flown by – with highs and lows, celebrations and disappointments, departures and reunions. 2009 was like no other year. It’s not easy to keep everything straight. That’s why WERDER.DE has put together a Green-White flashback for the end of the year. Werder 2009 from A to Z – to remember and smile. Today: Part 4 – L to O:

L - Leader: In the 60th minute of the German Cup final, which Werder won 1-0 against Bayer Leverkusen in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, Bremen’s long-time captain Frank Baumann left the football pitch for the final time as a football professional to a tremendous ovation. The end of his career was a "moving moment" for the quiet but great leader. Baumann was Werder captain for nine years and won one Bundesliga title and two German Cups while taking part in the Champions League for five seasons and reaching the UEFA Cup final once. "Frank and his calming, objective and very confident manner influenced Werder’s public image and impacted how likable we are perceived. But mainly he played very successful football over a very long period of time," said Bremen manager Klaus Allofs of the departing Baumann. But the 34-year-old will be returning to Werder in January 2010 as an assistant to the board of directors, staying within the Bremen family. Much luck in the new endeavours!

M - Mainz 05: Lefteris Matsoukas opened the door for Werder’s U19 team to win the German A-Junior championship with the winning goal in a 1-0 victory in the away first leg of the semi-final tie against Mainz. With some 2,000 Werder fans on hand, Bremen’s youngsters needed just 90 minutes of concentrated football to reach the final for the first time since 2000. And Werder Bremen’s last German A-Junior championship came in 1999. But the heirs of Borowski could not hold off the strong Mainz side, which won 3-0 at Platz 11 to reach the final.

N – a Nobody: He shot and shot and shot – all told five times in the first 30 minutes after being subbed in – without reloading almost like in the Wild West. But Philipp Bargfrede was either just inches off target or Union keeper Jan Glinker made a great save. Werder eased past second division promoted side Union Berlin 5-0 in the opening round of the German Cup. But Bargfrede – an until-then nobody and outsider – suddenly became an "alternative" for the future according to manager Klaus Allofs. Philipp Bargfrede rose up from Werder’s own youth ranks and the midfielder was in Bremen’s starting line-up every game until the 14th game day. “It’s a real pleasure how he’s going about things,” said Allofs. The only thing missing is Bargfrede’s first goal – but that will come for sure.

O – "Oceana": Weekend after weekend, hundreds of thousands of football fans pour into Bundesliga stadiums around the country. They travel by car, bus, tram, train, bike, by foot and even by airplane. But fans being able to take a boat to the stadium gates may be unique throughout the world. Still it has been possible in Bremen since early November, when the dock at the foot of Weser Stadium was opened before the home match against Borussia Dortmund.

The remaining letters of the 2009 WERDER almanac will continue in the coming days.
