Werder Bremen lost the 91st North Derby against Hamburg 2-1 on the road to finish the first half of the Bundesliga in sixth place on the table. Naldo scored Werder’s goal in the 93rd minute after Joris Mathijsen (9’) and Marcell Jansen (36’) tallied for Hamburg, who saw Jerome Boateng red carded in the 32nd minute.
Werder started the game slowly in front of 57,000 fans in Hamburg, falling behind 1-0 after just nine minutes on the snow-covered pitch. Dennis Aogo’s corner went to an un-manned Joris Mathijsen, who headed home the first goal from five yards for Hamburg. Naldo was unlucky in the 27th minute, striking the crossbar with a bicycle kick. Hamburg defender Jerome Boateng was shown the red card after 32 minutes for his tackle as last man on Marko Marin, leaving Thomas Schaaf’s men with a man advantage for nearly the final hour.
But Hamburg came up with the perfect answer as Eljero Elia’s perfect pass went to Marcell Jansen, who beat a charging Bremen keeper Tim Wiese from 26 yards to make it 2-0. Despite having an extra man and more space, Bremen were unable to find their rhythm under the difficult weather conditions. Wiese kept Bremen within striking distance with an acrobatic save on Mathijsen’s shot in the 45th minute, leaving Werder down 2-0 at the break.
Hamburg tried to use their compact defence to bring home the victory, allowing Bremen to control the run of play. Aaron Hunt had a good chance in the 65th minute but shot wide right from six yards. And Hamburg keeper Frank Rost cleared to corner Torsten Frings’ long distance shot eight minutes later. Bremen continued their march forward but Hunt hammered the crossbar in the 85th minute and Marin did the same a minute later. Naldo finally pulled a goal back for Bremen three minutes into stoppage time with a header on Petri Pasanen’s assist. But it was too little too late as they lost the final game of 2009.
