After going through seven months of withdrawal, the next derby between Hamburg and Werder Bremen is finally here as they face off on Sunday, 20 December 2009 at 3:30 p.m. at the HSH Nordbank Arena.
Unforgettable pictures of the dramatic quartet
"Of course the derby against Hamburg brings up a lot of emotions. We want to put together a successful game and go into the winter break with a positive feeling," said Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf at the press conference ahead of the game. "These games are a treat for every player!" said Hamburg coach Bruno Labbadia. And the 43-year-old coach should know as he wore the jersey of both the “Reds” and the Green-Whites over the course of his Bundesliga career.
Of course, who can forget last season’s 19-day stretch of four Werder-Hamburg derbies in the German Cup and UEFA Cup semi-finals – both of which were won by Bremen. "For the one side (Werder) it was a nice stretch. But it wasn’t so nice for the other," said Schaaf recalling the emotional games against Hamburg. And hopefully things go similarly on Sunday.
