Winter has arrived in Bremen. Packed warmly with hats, gloves and thick jackets, Werder players Friday morning completed their penultimate training session before the North Derby on Sunday. But one player was clearly missing. Fans on the sidelines were searching in vain for Claudio Pizarro. The 31-year-old was unable to take part in the Green-Whites’ team training – just like Clemens Fritz (muscle fibre tear) and Philipp Bargfrede (knee problems). “After his appearances the last few days we wanted to tone down a bit the burden on Claudio,” said head coach Thomas Schaaf at a press conference about the absence of the Peruvian striker.
But there is no reason to worry for Green-White supporters as the Bremen coach has already announced the striker’s return. “Claudio will participate in the final training on Saturday as usual,” said the 48-year-old coach.
The 2009 football year meanwhile is over for defender Clemens Fritz. The 29-year-old will definitely not be available for Werder against Hamburg. “We had the hope that there would be enough time for him to be in Hamburg. But that is not the case unfortunately. Otherwise we will have the same game roster as midweek in Bilbao,” said Schaaf, referring to the players expected to travel Hamburg.
