Now that is a really great gift for the Christmas season! Head coach Thomas Schaaf has prematurely extended his contract with Werder Bremen for two years until 30 June 2012. Werder board of directors chairman Klaus Allofs made the announcement late Monday afternoon. "We are very happy that we could announce before the new year that we are continuing our work together," said Allofs.
Despite an already long road together, one could tell that Thomas Schaaf was also excited about staying on in Bremen. "Our collective goal is to advance successfully. I see that Werder still have an interesting team to pursue our goals. That’s why it was not difficult to accept the new challenges," said Schaaf.
Thomas Schaaf has been with Werder Bremen as head coach since 10 May 1999. In his first weeks as coach he saved Werder from relegation and guided the team to the German Cup in 1999. In the following year he led them again to the cup final. The Mannheim native’s biggest success as Green-Whites head coach came in 2003-04 when he guided the talented team with Micoud, Ailton & Co. to the Bundesliga title and cup championship as well as qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in 10 years. Bremen played in the Champions League the next five years and won the German Cup again in 2009. In addition, Schaaf led Werder to the final of the UEFA Cup in May 2009 in Istanbul. Under Schaaf’s tutelage, a number of players have developed into national team players for their respective nations. With Aaron Hunt making his debut in the autumn, he became the 11th Bremen player in the German national team who has worked with Schaaf.
