Sebastian Boenisch has played his final football match in 2009 as the defender will miss the Europa League game at Athletic Bilbao and the Bundesliga north derby against Hamburg. That was the diagnosis of Sunday tests of his knee injury. It was determined that the 22-year-old strained the medial collateral and cruciate ligament in his right knee in a collision with Schalke's Carlos Zambrano in the 79th minute on Saturday. Boenisch also suffered meniscus damage. "I really had pain after the game and could not walk. That is really bitter just before the winter break," said Boenisch.
The U21 European champion doesn't want to waste any time now. Boenisch did not stay long at Werder's internal Christmas celebrations on Sunday afternoon, using the chance for talks with head coach Thomas Schaaf and team doctor Dr. Götz Dimanski. "Sebastian will travel to Regensburg to be examined by knee specialist Dr. Eichhorn. He will look at Sebastian during a congress. Then Sebastian will travel to Straubing where Dr. Eichhorn will operate on him on Tuesday," said Dimanski Monday morning.
Schaaf wished his full back a quick recovery. "Now we have to wait and see how the operation goes and how bad the damage is. I hope it's not too bad and Sebastian can come back relatively quick next year. We all wish him all the best," said the coach.
