The reactions in Green-White camp were unanimous: The loss against Schalke was deserved. And the team was very disappointed! "It can happen that you have a bad day and are not on your game. But I did not like how we played today. Schalke invested more in the game, showed more will and we could not do anything against their freshness," said Bremen manager Klaus Allofs.
Head coach Thomas Schaaf did not see things any differently. "Schalke have shown all season that their game is based on compactness, will and dedication. You have to match that and we just could not do so. Today we were supposed to prevail against the strong resistance. But we did not do that," said the coach.
"We did not find the right means. Schalke stood very well defensively. Still we had two good chances but did not convert on them. We let Schalke kind of lull us asleep. We came out of the changing room wanting to increase the pressure and then they scored straight away. Then we needed a lot of energy chasing after them," said Clemens Fritz.
Schalke meanwhile were very satisfied with their showing. "We knew the longer it remained 0-0 the better our chances would be. In the first half we were not that courageous. But we did better in the second half. Our concept worked perfectly," said German international Heiko Westermann. And goal scorer Kevin Kuranyi added: "We showed a good game because we never let Bremen into the game how they can play."
