Sebastian Mielitz kept alive Werder Bremen’s unbeaten streak in the 54th minute and captured an unforgettable moment for himself. Cologne striker Milivoje Novakovic stood alone in front of him but as the Slovenian shot "Miele" used a great reflex to deflect the ball wide of the post. "I tried to pressure him and took a couple steps towards him. Then I stood still a while and it worked," said Mielitz, who did not really want this kind of scene in the Bundesliga debut. "No, those kind of things can go in. That’s why it’s better that those kinds of chances don’t even come about. I had a bit of luck on my side today," said Mielitz.
The youngster’s recipe for success was apparently keeping his cool despite playing in front of 50,000 spectators. "We didn’t worry at all about the first Bundesliga appearance for Sebastian. Of course we had to see if he could keep his nerves in front of such a crowd. But that apparently was no problem for him. His performance was flawless," said manager Klaus Allofs. Mielitz also wasn’t worried that his Bundesliga debut included an extra special difficulty with the introduction of the new World Cup ball. The keeper called the ball cool just one day after it drew criticism from his Bundesliga colleagues. "It’s just a ball. It comes at you and you have to block it away. Hildebrand said yesterday that the ball was a catastrophe for goalkeepers. I can’t really say anything to that. I really didn’t have it in my hands much today. Cologne hardly shot on goal," added Mielitz.
Head coach Thomas Schaaf said his team could not put together a full effort. "We have to live with this point today because everything we built up pretty well we were unable to finish off. We would play a good ball, pass well, open space, but then we could not develop the penetration. We played well today but not well enough to leave the pitch as winner," said Schaaf.
