Werder Bremen’s next opponents on Sunday, 6 December 2009 at 3:30 p.m. Cologne may have had a disappointing season thus far in the relegation fight, but Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf expects a tough game at Rhein Energie Stadium. "I know that we can expect a heated battle on Sunday in which we will be facing a determined team," said Schaaf.
With the support of their home fans, Cologne hope to snap Bremen’s unbeaten streak, which has run to 22 games, and create some space from the relegation zone with three points at home. "Our goal must be to turn the Rhein Energie Stadium into a fortress. We have not been able to do that very well recently. But we want to and have to turn that around," said Cologne coach Zvonimir Soldo ahead of the 79th showdown between the teams.
The Cologne side’s strength is their defence. In addition to the veteran 38-year-old keeper Faryd Mondragon, also impressive are both centre backs Geromel and Mohamad. There are two excellent strikers in Milivoje Novakovic and Lukas Podolski, but they have not been able to convince thus far with seven goals in 14 games. Werder’s goal is a victory in Cologne. "I hope that we can continue the streak in Cologne," said manager Klaus Allofs.
