This has only happened in the Schaaf Era very, very seldom. The Bremen coach swapped seven players from his starting line-up from the last Bundesliga game - perhaps the biggest swap between Green-White games in the past 10 years. The fact that Bremen were already qualified allowed Bremen this unusual chance. "It was important for us to use this situation to give those players who haven't played much due to injuries some game practice to move on in the next few weeks. Besides, of course we had thoughts on taking into account the odd boo-boo, especially not pushing problems with Naldo and Mesut (Özil)," admitted head coach Thomas Schaaf.

The coach also made clear however that despite the many personnel changes, winning had an absolute priority. "Every one of our players has high expectations and you can say the team really was determined," said Schaaf. Vice-captain Per Mertesacker said things went very positively in the victory over the Portuguese. "The game was important for the whole team. We had to throw in some players who had not played all that much in the past. We controlled the game for about 50 or 60 minutes. But we need to play a little bit more assured. Unfortunately we missed the chance to make it 3-0. After they made it 2-1 we ran into trouble for a little bit," said Mertesacker.

The happiest players of the night were undoubtedly the two-goal scorer Markus Rosenberg, Marcelo Moreno and debutant Sebastian Mielitz. "That was a super game today. After leading 1-0, we had more space for me to move in," said the Swede Rosenberg, who played a full 90 minutes for the first time since May 13. His South American attack partner Moreno was also satisfied after the game. "I am happy that the coach gave me the chance to play from the start. And I am happy that I was able to help the team with my goal," said Moreno. Just as pleased was Mileitz about his first match with the professional team. "Short and simple: it was super! It was so much fun playing in front of the big crowd. A dream came true for me today. Every little boy dreams of that. I used to stand up there in the curve and look down. This today was certainly something emotional. But things settled down after 10, 20 minutes," said the keeper Mileitz, who was playing for Tim Wiese.
