Per Mertesacker screamed his joy into the night sky over Bremen, ran towards the south western corner of Weser Stadium and slid four yards on his knees to the corner flag, where he was just seconds later buried by Sebastian Boenisch, Tim Wiese and other teammates. Werder once again proved their strength of will in stoppage time and scored the 2-2 equaliser. For Klaus Allofs, this was a typical feature of the team this season. "The goal for 2-1 was a real setback for us. But our team always looks forward positively and the opponent realises that they are playing a team that never gives us," said Allofs.
"Merte" of course was happy to extend Werder’s undefeated streak to 21 games. "Actually the 2-1 goal was the shot that killed us. But we didn’t let it affect us. We came back nonetheless. And we are still undefeated. Wolfsburg stood well but you could sense that we absolutely wanted the equaliser. We showed our absolute will to keep up this streak. We know that everyone wants to beat us and we take on this challenge. But we have to go into every game with full concentration," said Per Mertesacker.
Captain Torsten Frings said after the 2-2 draw against Wolfsburg in Weser Stadium that Bremen must remain calm. "We shouldn’t be talking about our streak or the title. We fell asleep twice and Wolfsburg scored two goals in three chances. And we were missing that a bit today," said Frings. Head coach Thomas Schaaf was not at all satisfied with his team’s performance. "I am not satisfied and am aggravated. We did not play how we had planned to. We could not find the balance between offense and defence from the past couple weeks. We were too hectic and did not have a clear line of thought. Our effect did not include the necessary effectiveness. We have to change that," said Schaaf.
