Werder Bremen saved it for late in playing to a 2-2 draw (0-1) at home against Wolfsburg in the 14th game day. In front of 34,000 spectators at Weser Stadium, Edin Dzeko (42’/85’) twice gave the German champions the lead. But Hugo Almeida equalised in the 62nd minute and Per Mertesacker scored a minute into stoppage time for the draw.
Werder dominated the run of play for most of the first half and had the first good chance of the game. Captain Torsten Frings was back in the starting line-up for the first time since the 11th game day and fed Hugo Almeida with a fine cross in the fifth minute. The Portuguese striker’s header was stopped in the last instant by Wolfsburg keeper Diego Benaglio. Wolfsburg countered with a fine opportunity by Grafite after 26 minutes but Tim Wiese was a bit better.
There were two more top scenes in the first half as Makoto Hasebe cleared Naldo’s shot in the 35th minute just before the line for Wolfsburg. And seven minutes later, the ball was in Bremen’s net. Dzeko worked his way past Sebastian Boenisch and Naldo on the right side of the area before beating Wiese to the far left post for the 1-0 lead – which was also the score at the break.
Werder struggled to find their game early on in the second half but finally grabed the equaliser in the 62nd minute. After a corner, Hasebe cleared Aaron Hunt’s deflected shot at the goal line but the rebound went to Almeida, who blasted home from nine yards.
Just when it looked like things would end 1-1, Dzeko struck again in the 85th minute, hitting home Karim Zlani’s free kick to make it 2-1 for the Wolves. But Werder did not give up and had a corner kick a minute into stoppage time. And Mesut Özil’s corner was struck home by Per Mertesacker for the final 2-2 score line.
