Thomas Schaaf’s team stormed to the top of the Bundesliga with a convincing 6-0 victory in their away match at Freiburg. Hugo Almeida struck twice while Marko Marin, Mesut Özil, Naldo and Markus Rosenberg all scored as well. Özil set up four goals as well.
Werder Bremen had to overcome a strong first 10 minutes by the promoted hosts before taking over the proceedings in Badenova Stadium. Naldo’s header in the 11th was the first chance for Bremen, which attacked and clearly dominated Freiburg. Daniel Jensen was unlucky in hitting the left post after 15 minutes and Özil struck the same upright 13 minutes later. But Werder finally broke through and took the lead in the 33rd minute as Özil fed Almeida and the Portuguese striker headed home from five yards for the 1-0 lead, which was also the score at the break.
Marko Marin doubled the lead on a fine free kick goal into the near left corner in the 55th minute and Almeida struck again just two minutes later to make it 3-0, basically deciding the game already with Özil again setting up the goal. The young German international finally was added to the scoring column after 67 minutes after a fine pass from Jensen to push the lead to 4-0. Özil was taken down in the area minutes later and Naldo stepped up the spot and converted the penalty to make it 5-0 after 73 minutes. Bremen continued to dominate play and could hardly help scoring again as Özil crossed in his fourth assist of the afternoon to Rosenberg, who easily struck home for the final 6-0 scoreline. The victory extends Bremen’s undefeated streak to 20 games and pushes them atop the league, moving past Bayer Leverkusen thanks to more goals scored.
