Four of five Bremen players played for the German national team in their test match against Ivory Coast Wednesday night in Gelsenkirchen. Tim Wiese made his starting line-up debut in goal for Germany while Werder teammates Per Mertesacker and Mesut Özil also were in the starting XI. German national team coach Joachim Löw substituted in Aaron Hunt after 80 minutes for Bastian Schweinsteiger. Wiese was subbed out after 45 minutes for local Schalke keeper Manuel Neuer between the posts while Mertesacker and Özil both played the full 90 minutes. The fifth Werder player Marko Marin did not play in the game. Lukas Podolski (11', 90+' pen) scored both goals for Germany while Eboue (57') and Seydou Doumbia (85') hit for Ivory Coast.
