Hugo Almeida and Portugal opened the door to the 2010 World Cup with a 1-0 home victory against Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Play-offs. The Werder striker, who was nominated by Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz after a long injury break, was subbed in after 88 minutes. The return leg will take place on Wednesday, 18 November 2009 in Zenica. Brazil meanwhile won their friendly against England 1-0 with Werder centre back Naldo following the entire game from the bench.
The German U21 national team allowed the 1-1 equaliser in the final action of the game in Northern Ireland. Werder midfielder Philipp Bargfrede was subbed in during the stoppage time. It was a tough setback for the Germans in the European Championship qualification as they had hoped to bring home a full six points in the games in Belfast and against San Marino on 17 November 2009. Nuremberg youngster Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored the only goal of the game for the Germans.
Werder’s Daniel Jensen and the Danish national team had to make do with a 0-0 draw against South Korea. The 30-year-old Jensen started the game but coach Morten Olsen replaced him with Johan Absalonsen after 70 minutes.
