Werder’s German national team members returned to Bremen after the cancellation of Germany’s friendly against Chile following the tragic death of German international keeper Robert Enke. They arrived back along the Weser on Wednesday night and will stay until Sunday when they return to the German national team. After talks with the sports bosses after their return, it was decided that the five players would be exempted for practice. “All of them were affected. And the closer the contact with Robert Enke over the years was the more intensive the sorrow was for one or the other player. We want to give every player the chance to deal with this in their own way,” said Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf.
Marko Marin, Aaron Hunt, Mesut Özil and Tim Wiese all spent time with their teammates on Thursday and took part in practice. On Sunday, Werder’s five German internationals will take part in the planned memorial ceremony at AWD Arena at 11 a.m. with the rest of the German national team and training staff. In addition to family and friends, tens of thousands of football fans will be on hand. On hand from Werder Bremen will be board chairman Klaus Allofs and head coach Thomas Schaaf.
