Following the tragic death of German national team keeper Robert Enke, the German Football Federation (DFB) cancelled off the international friendly against Chile for this coming Saturday in Cologne.
The decision was made Wednesday afternoon at the German national team’s quarters in Bonn after talks between DFB President Dr. Theo Zwanziger, General Secretary Wolfgang Niersbach, German national team coach Joachim Löw and team manager Oliver Bierhoff. Before hand, a majority of the team which was preparing in Bonn for the game against Chile had spoken out in favour of cancelling the contest. The five Werder players Mesut Özil, Marko Marin, Tim Wiese, Aaron Hunt and Per Mertesacker will return to Bremen.
“It was clear mutually for all of us that we could not play this game on Saturday against Chile. We ask for your understanding. There is no alternative to this decision,” said Dr. Zwanziger.
Before the nomination for the World Cup roster in May, there remains for Germany only the friendly against Ivory Coast next Wednesday, 18 November (starting at 8:45 p.m., live on ARD) in Gelsenkirchen and the top showdown with Argentina on 3 March 2010 in Munich
