Just what head coach Thomas Schaaf had hinted on Friday became reality. Claudio Pizarro was not included on the roster for the home game against Borussia Dortmund. While his teammates prepared for the game on Sunday at the final training, the Peruvian striker could only complete light running drills. The bruised ankle appears to be worse than originally hoped.
Hugo Almeida has good chances to replace Pizarro as Werder striker on Sunday. The Portuguese is a real option for the starting line-up, and not just because of his goal against Vienna. The 25-year-old showed good physical condition at the final training session and also scored a nice goal with his head.
Regardless of line-up, Werder hopes to give their fans a good game on Sunday. "We will give our all to keep the three points in Bremen. This game is very important for us to win," said Mesut Özil.
Thomas Schaaf nominated the following 18 players for the game against Dortmund: Wiese, Mielitz, Pasanen, Naldo, Fritz, Mertesacker, Marin, Özil, Borowski, Hunt, Niemeyer, Rosenberg, Bargfrede, Boenisch, Husejinovic, Almeida, Prödl, Jensen
