When Werder Bremen's match against Borussia Dortmund kicks off on Sunday, 8 November 2009 at 5:30 p.m. at Weser Stadium, it will be the Green-Whites' 21st domestic or international contest of the season. "Of course we want to play in every competition as long as possible. And we also have to watch out how we deal with those burdens," said head coach Thomas Schaaf at the final press conference before the home match. "I think we have done a good job thus far spreading out the load so that we are well prepared for all three competitions," Schaaf said of the Bundesliga, Europa League and German Cup.
The newly nominated German national team player Aaron Hunt saw things similarly as his coach. "I think the game on Sunday is our seventh game in the last three weeks. And of course that costs a lot of energy. Still, we want to go as far as we can in all three competitions. The last two games have not been very good for us. Therefore we have to shift it to another gear on Sunday," said Hunt.
The availability of Claudio Pizarro, however, is very doubtful even though the Peruvian completed light running drills on Friday.
"Things are getting better with Claudio. But I don't think he will be available for us on Sunday," said Schaaf, who also made no secret about the importance of the South American to the Green-Whites' game plan. "Claudio has a special role in our game with his experience and his quality, especially with his certitude. Of course I would like to have him there on Sunday - no question," added Schaaf. Hugo Almeida, who scored the 2-0 goal against Austria Vienna, is ready to take over in attack against Dortmund.
